WYOMING CUTTING HORSE ASSOCIATION

Past News Letters

December 20, 2009

The 2009 NCHA Futurity wrapped up on Sunday, December 13. Once again this year, High Brow Cat’s offspring dominated the Futurity in numbers, with colts out of Dual Rey right at his heels. Tony Piggott riding Rockin’ W, a colt by Dual Rey, won the Open Futurity scoring a remarkable 229, and winning $250,000. Ashley Smith Snyder, daughter of Greg Smith, won the Limited Non Pro riding Bobs A Player, by Bobs Freckle. Congratulations Ashley!
Glen Barlow of Gillette was among the top contenders in Fort Worth, being the only finalist from Wyoming. He was aboard Sangria Rey, a sorrel filly out ofTorsion Girl, the dam of Stella Starlight, and sired by Dual Rey. Barlow bought her at the Western Bloodstock Yearling Sale two years ago, and has been hard at work preparing her for this year. He hauled her around to high school rodeos and other events to expose her to everything she would see at the show, and it paid off because nothing seemed to bother her down there.

Barlow and headed to Texas where he arrived the day before Thanksgiving. With only a couple days to wait, Barlow showed in the first go of the Limited Non Pro where he scored a 213 which advanced him to the semi-finals, where he scored a 210 which was good enough to get him into the finals. Barlow drew up first in the Limited Non Pro finals and flushed the herd but he still ended up 23rd overall. In the Non Pro, Barlow had a rough go and didn’t advance, but that only gave him more focus and determination to do well in the Amateur class. There, he scored a 208 which advanced to the semi-finals, where he scored a 209. In the finals, he ended up 14th with a score of 203. About the finals, Glenn commented, “Everything was good ‘till the third cow. I cut a bad one and had a miss or two. Down there you can’t mess up your cuts and do well.”

Looking back over the show, Barlow said, “I was very happy with my horse and I had excellent help. I was fortunate to have advanced and made the finals. I learned a lot. It’s like a marathon when you keep advancing.” Barlow made the 1,200 mile journey back to Wyoming with $13,300 in winnings and a great experience to remember forever.

To wrap things up, I would like to remind you all to be a part of the general membership meeting, taking place on January 10th at 1:00 PM. You may call 1-866-519-2804, and then enter the pass code: 743349. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

Howdy Cutters;

Well, it is that time of year, again……NCHA Futurity time!  Now, thanks all of this modern technology, people who can’t attend the futurity in person can view all the action, whether it be the actual competition or the horse sales, via the internet!   The NCHA Futurity kicks off on November 21 with a little over two weeks of festivities.  The Western Bloodstock  sales will be held from December 8-13th, with the Western Bloodstock Preferred Breeder sales  being televised on RFD TV on December  10 and 11, beginning at 8:00 a.m.  Also,  you may watch all of the sales or all of the futurity by going to www.nchacutting.com and click on the links to the Futurity or Western Bloodstock and then to the live webcast to view all the action!

As you know, the World Finals are no longer in Amarillo but there is a new World Finals format that will take place during the NCHA futurity.  The new World Finals format will feature the Top 15 Open horses and the Top 15 Non Pro riders from the 2009 point year.  Go-round action will take place in the Watt Arena on the grounds of the Will Rogers Memorial Center, beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24
th, Wednesday, November 25th, Friday, November 27th and at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 28th.  A “non-working finals” fifth go round will also be a part of the World finals format.  On Thursday, December 10,  following the Amateur and Non-Pro semi –finals, the NCHA will host a “blow out” Top 15 Party to honor  and present awards to the Top 15 finishers in each of the NCHA’s 12 approved weekend classes.  The party will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Round-Up Inn at the Will Rogers Memorial Center.

We do have several WCHA members who are holding their own in the standings for the World Finals!  In the Non Pro, Steve Norris is in 5
th  place with earnings of $28,165.88 aboard Freckles Royally Doc.  In the 50,000 mateur, Colton Strain is also in 5th with earnings of $15,500.77 riding Cuttin Smart and My Sporty Shorty and he is setting 9th in the 15,000 Novice Horse Non Pro with earnings of $10,309.90.  Linda Werner is holding 9th in the 20,000 Non Pro with earnings of $2,975.00 and in the 3000 Novice Horse, Kenny Platt is currently 4th on Hank and Karen True’s ‘Play Bling’ with earnings of $11,563.80 and 6th on Peptos Stylish Lynx with earnings of $8,853.09.  Jack Enright and Ima Flo Too are currently 15th in the 10,000 Amateur with earnings of $2,949.25 and Joel Schulz is also holding 15th in the 2000 Limit Rider with earnings of $3,665.53. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the final World Standings should be official, however, there are a few more shows to include in the standings so here is wishing all of these competitors the best of luck through the year end!

In the next issue, all qualifiers for Ogden will be published but if you would like to know if you qualified before then, please visit our website at:  www.wyomingcha.com and click on the link. Lastly, I would like to include a “thank you note”  that I received from our past  Treasurer, Diane Booher.  Diane received a WCHA jacket for all of her past services to the Association and since it the time of year when we all count our blessings, I thought it was appropriate.  I think her words speak for all of us!  Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hi All!

The postman brought me a lovely gift today. I was surprised and very pleased with the jacket. It will be a treasured gift always.

Thank you so much. The great times I have had as a member and officer of the WCHA will be with me forever as will the memories of the people I had the pleasure to know and work with. I guess that's true of many of us older cutters, otherwise there wouldn't be that picture of some of us old poops sitting in the stands during the futurity. We may have quit cutting (except for Steve) but it's still in the blood.

Again, thank you all for the jacket.

See you down the road, probably,

Diane

Howdy Members;

Since everything has slowed down and the year is wrapping up, I wanted to dedicate this issue to our Ireland trip winners.  Merlin, Lori, Sierra and Anna Zowada, a family from Sheridan, purchased the winning ticket at the 2009 Rock Springs High School Rodeo back in April.   Their ticket was drawn at the Sevenbar Summer Cutting in Saratoga.  All four members of the Zowada family embarked on their trip in August and had a wonderful time!   The following is a letter to the WCHA from Lori Zowada, describing their adventure to Ireland but before we get to that, I would like to again extend a thank you to Jack and Anne Enright  and their families over in Ballybunion, County Kerry Ireland, for tirelessly working on organizing this trip of a lifetime! The hospitality that the Zowadas received on their trip was exceptional and will never be forgotten!  All in all, the raffle generated approximately $11,000.00 for our association and we will be raffling off another trip to Ireland next year so save up your dough!  Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the letter and the photos!

ZOWADA FAMILY TRIP TO IRELAND

Anne Enright's sister Angela and her family met us at the Shannon Airport and escorted us all the way to Ballybunion.  They stopped to show us Bunratty Castle along the way and to have some refreshments at a nearby coffee shop.  It's the really tall castle with the rock wall around it.

The first pictures in line are when we arrived in Ballybunion at the Cashen Bar & Restaurant that Jack Enright's sister Maura owns.    The picture includes Maura, Jack's Mum & Dad - Mary and Seamus (shaymus), Anne Enright's sister Angela and her son Scott (her husband was missing) and of course, us.  They had a sign out front "welcoming the Zowada Family".  Ballybunion was surrounded by the coastline so the girls got to go play on the beach.  There was a cool castle wall on top of a grassy area overlooking the beach.  There were many, many big beautiful rock buildings like the next picture of a couple of churches that are still in use.

Driving in Ireland was an interesting experience.  We took a few pictures of the road while we were driving to show how narrow most of the roads were.  Most were either lined with tall dirt walls covered with grasses, vegetation, flowers or bushes or lots of rock walls or rock fences.  Most pastures were fenced with hedges or rock walls.  Some trees made a tunnel over the roads.   There was lots of vegetation.  We had to drive on the left side of the roads and the steering wheels of the cars were on the right side of the car.  My husband was the only one brave enough to take on that task!

The pictures starting with the Constable (Irish Policeman) are photos of an old stone prison from the past when England ruled Ireland centuries ago.  The man who is posed beside the Constable is John Mulvihill, a friend of the Enright family, who took us on a tour and told us about the history around the town of Tarbert after we toured the old prison.  He told us some of the horror stories of what people went to prison for; like grazing a cow on the neighbor's grass because they were poor and had nothing to feed the cow which they depended on for using and trading its milk. This man spent two weeks in prison and had to pay 10 pounds which was a year's salary for most.  And a woman with six or seven children, whose husband had died, stole a couple cabbage or cucumber plants and had to go to prison with her 8 month old baby while the rest of her kids were put in a government work farm.  They shipped the woman off to Australia (for long term prisoners) and her baby died on the way.  She probably never got to see the rest of her kids again.  How horrible!  We are so fortunate that life is not like that these days!  The other pictures are of the ferry with all the cars on it.  The ferry runs every half hour across the Shannon River to shorten people’s traveling time and the dirt looking fields were part of the tour by John Mulvihill.  The fields are peat fields which is what quite a few Irish burn in their fireplaces or heat stoves like we use coal here.

Merlin also got to golf with Paul Enright, Jack's brother and another friend where President Clinton, President Bush, Tiger Woods and other famous golfers have played on the Ballybunion golf course.

The next pictures were from our adventure to Kerry Bog Village past Killarney.  The owner is good friends with Seamus (Shaymus) who is Jack Enright’s Dad.   The picture of us at the red door is The Red Fox Inn.  The owner’s son stood with us and earlier we got a picture of Seamus with the owner.  Seamus and Mary escorted us there and it became quite hair-raising when we lost them in the traffic of Killarney but ended up finding them at the property anyway!  Seamus and Mary Enright were the cutest and sweetest little folks you ever met!  We were treated to a nice lunch and then toured Kerry Bog Village which was a little village of thatch roof houses and old fashioned horse-drawn farm equipment as well as a few of the world famous Kerry Bog ponies.

The last castle shown in several pictures is Muckross Castle which we got to tour.  It was huge!  We took several pictures of the flower gardens that surround it.  We were treated to a horse and cart ride up to a waterfall that was close by. The pictures of some of the other people are Bed and Breakfast owners who donated a place for us to stay while we were there.  We had wonderful meals with quite a few paid for.  We also met a family friend, Jennifer Walsh, who owned an arcade down the street from the Cashen Bar.  She kept us busy in the evenings and kept slipping us extra vouchers to play more.  We met so many nice, helpful people!

Food was good yet interestingly different.  In most restaurants, there was no Ranch dressing or BBQ sauce for dipping.   We were informed that our tradition of corned beef with potatoes and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day is actually bacon instead of corned beef in Ireland.  They drink a lot of coffee and tea in Ireland and Irish Soda Bread or Brown Bread is always served with restaurant meals.  I had hot tea with milk for the first time (and a little sugar) and really enjoyed it.  Ireland must eat quite a bit healthier than America.  There is a very limited amount of soda:  Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, 7-Up and Orange or bottles of flavored Nestea.

It was quite interesting and wonderful to meet so many of Jack & Anne Enright’s sweet families in Ireland and I have yet to meet Jack & Anne in person!  We would have liked to have brought Jack’s Mum & Dad back with us to adopt them if they would have let us.  Everyone took such good care of us, we will miss them all.  If only it wasn’t so far to get there and home!

My dad was born on St. Patrick’s Day and even though he was Polish, we always celebrated in an Irish manner on his birthday and called him an Irish Polock.  Even though we lost him three years ago, this trip brought back many special memories of all the Irish Birthdays we spent with him.

We thank everyone for all the generosity and hospitality that we were privileged to- from getting ready for the trip until we got back home!  We’re sorry if the pictures seem limited.  Sometimes we saw great sights while in the car and couldn’t pull over to get pictures.

Thanks for the great trip!

Lori, Merlin, Sierra and Anna Zowada

Deal or no deal?  There definitely was a Diehl at the Wyoming Cutting Horse Association Futurity this year….in fact, there were three of them.  Frank, Ora and Curry Diehl and they brought a trailer load of good horses along with them!  According to Frank and Ora’s son, Curry, the Diehl family has been involved in the cutting horse industry for the past 10 to 12 years or so mostly showing as Non Pros but Curry gave up his card this past year to train and show for his family.  Apparently his decision was a good one as Curry came away from the Wyoming futurity with a win in the Open Derby aboard ‘Dealwithacoolcat,’ second in the Open Derby on ‘Deal or a Deal’ and second in the Classic riding ‘Henry Harwood.’  His 3 year old, ‘Smooth and a Deal,’ was also a finalist in the Futurity class.   Mom, Ora Diehl, also rode ‘Smooth and a Deal’ to a 3rd place finish in the Non Pro Futurity.  Dad, Frank, rode ‘A Very Special Cat’ to a 5th place finish in the Classic Non Pro.  You may say, “that’s great—but I don’t know these people,” however, you may be more acquainted with them than you think!!    You see, the Diehl family also ‘deals’ in tomatoes!  So every time you put one of those luscious, fleshy fruits on a hamburger, it was probably grown by the Diehl family.  They are one of the largest producers of tomatoes in the United States, hence that interesting brand on the left hip of some of their horses…….No, it is not an orange!!  It is a tomato.

Scott Amos, from Loma, Colorado took home the 3 Year Old Open Championship aboard ‘Prf Reys Gingerpunch’, owned by Peter Deleewe and also was 3rd in the Open Derby on Kristin Omvig’s nice horse ‘Smooth Calie Cat.’   Robin Hayes had horses in the finals of all 3 divisions, winning the Classic Open on Jerry Gregory’s ‘Smoothe Scootin Cat,’  Robin executed an impeccable run in the Classic Finals, marking a 150.  Robin also placed 5th in the Open Futurity; aboard another horse owned by Gregory named ‘Cowgirl Time’ and he was 5th in the Open Derby riding Cathy and Tom Stalcups ‘Sweet Pequita Pepto.’  Kenneth Platt also made all three division finals.  In the Open Futurity, Kenny placed 6th on ‘Squeezes Majikat” owned by Susan Himmel.  For the Open Derby, Platt was 4th on ‘Smart Anna Doc’ owned by Dwight and Kathi Fisher and in the Open Classic he placed 3rd aboard ‘Peptos Stylish Lynx’ owned by Mike Simmons.

And yes, Dan Hansen made another appearance at our futurity this year, winning the Futurity Non Pro on ‘Tex San Time’, placed 3rd in the Derby Non Pro aboard ‘Pepcorn” and 6th in the Classic Non Pro on ‘CD Owen.’  Marla Hughs won the Futurity 50K Amateur  on ‘Sly Fly’ and our own Kristin York took home the Derby Non Pro Championship aboard ‘Sly Spin N Cat’ and was also the Derby 50K Amateur Champion.  ‘Mates New Christmas” took home the Classic Non Pro Championship under the hand of Don Smith and Jerry Gregory won the Classic 50K Amateur on ‘Smoothe Scootin Cat.’  Congratulations everyone!

The WCHA would like to thanks several people without whom this futurity would not have been a success.  Thank you to Cathy and Tom Stalcup and Cindy Thompson, who put in long hours pulling off this event.  Thanks Kristin York for awards and Steve James for dragging the arena: Justin Johnson for arranging the cattle and Bob Shepard for providing the cattle and trucking.  Thanks Rick and Trevor Alt for handling the cattle and setting up the arena.  Thanks to Laura Waterhouse, Kara and Traci Hatten for working in the practice pen and  Lori Stilwell for arranging our host hotel.  Thanks to Bill and Carlo Shepard, Meredith Lyons, the gals from Chubs Grub and John L Dublin for starting each day with a prayer and singing of the National Anthem.  Also, a very special thanks to Knife River Construction for donating the sand for the arena and especially to Lathrop’s Equipment of Casper for generously donating the use of a tractor and drag and also a gator to haul shavings!  And a final thank you to all of the participants!  Thanks for coming to our futurity and hope to see you here again next year!!

Hi Members;

 This newsletter comes to you from Farmington, New Mexico from the Nation High School Finals Rodeo.  This year, our cutters from Wyoming are probably some names that you will recognize.  Qualifiers in the boy’s cutting are:  AJ Fuchs from Teton Village, Matt Sheick from Casper and Logan Belle from Gillette.  Qualifiers in the girl’s cutting are:  Trey Barlow from Gillette, Kara Hatten from Wheatland, Cinnamon Smith from Gillette and Taylor Rients from Gillette.  Most of these kids started out with in our association!  Best of luck to all of you!!

Once again, Thad and Kristen York put on a fine cutting over the July 10th weekend….Thanks very much you two and thanks to all of your crew for working so hard to put on such a nice event.

We only have one more cutting on the roster, which of course is our year end show at The Arena in Casper.  This show is scheduled over Labor Day Week end.  The 1000 Novice Horse and 3 Year Olds will go on Friday, September 4 and the NCHA show will be on the 5th and 6th.  Lori Stilwell has reserved a block of rooms at the Ramada Plaza Riverside at a rate of $72.00 / night.  Our banquet will also be at the Ramada on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm.  The cutoff date for reservations is September 2 so please call and get your room a.s.a.p.  It is very important to stay at the host hotel so we can give them enough business to get rooms comped for our events!  The phone number for the Ramada is:  307-235-2531.

We are also having a silent auction to benefit the youth scholarship fund and are looking for items to be auctioned.  If you have an item that you would like to donate to the auction, please bring it to the cutting.

Lastly, you will find our up-to-date standings on our page and will probably notice some differences.  All out-of-state cutters who have not made 50% of our Wyoming shows (8 shows)   or those horses whose owner and riders are not current have been deleted.  Rules are rules.  If anyone has any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

That’s it for now.  I will have more details about our year end cutting in Casper in the next issue and results from the High School Finals.  And, remember, we always have a great practice pen at the year end show so bring your futurity colts!

Howdy Everyone,

We have a winner!!  Congratulations goes out to Lori Zawada, from Sheridan! Lori purchased the winning Ireland trip raffle ticket at a high school rodeo inLori Zawada and Family Rock Springs!  She and her family are very excited about winning the trip and are looking forward to going.  Our treasurer, Cindy Thompson, reported that total sales for the raffle came in at approximately $12,000.00!  After expenses, that leaves around $10,000 profit for the WCHA!  Thanks again to Jack and Anne Enright for working so hard on putting the trip together and thank you to all the folks in Ireland who most generously donated tours, accommodations and services!  This fund raiser will definitely help with the expenses that our Association incurs through out the year.

We held our drawing at the Seven Bar Ranch Memorial Day Cutting on May 25th.  Thank you Thad and Kristen for putting on a very nice cutting!  The weather was cool, the cattle were great, along with the ground and accommodations!

By time this newsletter comes out, the Area 4 NCHA days and the Barb Dahl Memorial Cutting will have already taken place so results of those events will be in the next issue.  Then it is back to Saratoga again for the Seven Bar Ranch cutting in July!  I wanted to remind all out of state cutters about our 50% rule.  All out of state cutters must attend at least 50% of the WCHA shows in order for their earnings to count for year end awards.  This year, out of state members must attend a total of 8 WCHA cuttings.  I have also just sent the Wrangler an up to dated membership list, so if you are not receiving your Wrangler, please check that your membership is paid.  Both owner and riders must be members.

We also have a new WCHA sponsor!  Wells Fargo of Jackson Hole, Wyoming has agreed to become a Cooperate Sponsor for the WCHA.  Thank you Michael J. Mathews, Wyoming Regional President, for your much appreciated support!

Lastly, congratulations to our Wyoming cutters at the Western National Championships:   Jake James, 9th in the Senior Youth aboard Smashin Aristocrat,  Rex Wilson, 15th in the 3,000 Novice/Non Pro on Freckleshickorycharm, Shannon Jones, 23rd in the 2000 Limit Rider on Vibrant Boon and Karen True, 22nd in the 10,000 Novice/Non Pro riding All About Jerry.  Great job, folks!

Good luck, everyone, at the upcoming cuttings!  If there is anything I can help you with or questions about the results or standings, please feel free to contact me!  Until then, enjoy summer!

Howdy Cutters;

Well, the weather finally cooperated and we were able to have a cutting at Top Hatt Arena!  The cutting was small but a good time was had by all.  Everyone enjoyed the particularly nice cattle………and there were plenty of them!  We would like to thank everyone who came and supported our event…..your participation is sincerely appreciated and we are looking forward to putting on more cuttings next year.   It is indeed a treat for us to share our home with all of our cutting friends!

One reason our show was smaller than usual is due to the fact that the NCHA Super Stakes was going on and it took several of the trainers that frequent our show here in Wheatland!  Todd Adolf, Kenny Platt, Justin Phinney, Kenny Miller and Jamie Snider all showed horses down there and did very well.  Jamie ended up second in the John Deere Division of the Open on Reymantic and was 15 in the  Classic Wildcard on Thad and Kristen York’s Doc’s A lot of Pepto!  Also, Mr. Paul Ferhenbach showed in the Amateur Classic and placed 22nd aboard Tachitas Roanie Boon.  Good job, Paul!! Boyd Rice won the deal on Third Cutting, out of Boonlight Dancer, and Metallic Cat, the winner of the NCHA Futurity this year, placed second.  All too cool!

The next show on our schedule is the Seven Bar Memorial Day Cutting, May 23, 24 and 25.  Three full days of NCHA cutting, people!  Remember, all the colt classes will be Friday afternoon, on the 22nd and the week end show starts at 8:00am.  Ought to be a good time!  Lots of fresh cattle and of course, a beautiful setting!!

PLEASE!  sell those raffle tickets as our goal is to have them all sold by Thad and Kristen’s show so we can draw a winner!!  Our Association can really use the funds generated by the fund raiser so get busy!!  Family, friends, associates, strangers off the stree …..just some ideas on who to sell ‘em to.   You can call Jack to get tickets:  307-221-1234!

Lastly, take a look at our website!  www.wyomingcha.com  Jacket info, trip info, show info is all on there!    And, I must apologize to Jake James, who I forgot to mention for doing well at the World Finals in Amarillo!  Jake and Smashin Aristocrat split 3rd-5th in the 20,000 Non Pro.  I am sorry I missed you, Jake!  Good Job!  Finally, best of luck to all of our cutters who are going to Ogden!!  I will keep everyone posted on the results.  Til then, enjoy spring and I will see ya all in Saratoga!

Traci

Hi Members;

I just have a few things for the newsletter this time……..This will be reaching you just after the conclusion of the Top Hatt March Show and the results of which will be published in the next issue.  I also wanted to remind those who are going Ogden to get your entries in by the 6th of April.  The WCHA and the MCHA will be co-sponsoring a free lunch for all the cutters in Ogden this year.  In return, we will get some recognition in the NCHA Western National Championships Event Program, recognition on the Scoreboard Message Center during the event, public announcements during the event to recognize our sponsorship and a ½ page black and white ad in the program.  And, best of all, we will be “buying lunch” for a lot of familiar faces who support our Wyoming shows and Futurity!  A nice way to say “thanks!”

Ticket sells for our trip to Ireland are going very, very well!  If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please get a hold of one of the directors or purchase them at the Top Hatt Shows.  The tickets are limited to 1250 and as soon as they are all sold, we will be drawing a winner.  We intend to make a big deal out of the drawing, like getting the governor or someone to do it.  Maybe get a little “press” to go along with it.  Once again, if you are interested in viewing details about the trip, go to Wyomingcha.com and click on the link.

Lastly, our schedule of approved shows is coming together quite nicely.  The updated list will be on our page.  One thing new to the WCHA this year is the eligibility of the Rookie of the Year.  It was unanimously decided at the Board of Directors meeting on March 7 that any person that has won less than a thousand dollars at the beginning of the 2009 point year will be eligible for the Rookie buckle.  If any of you cutters qualify for this award, please let me know so I can get your name on the roster.

Well, that is it for this time and here’s wishing you all the best of luck at Top Hatt!

‘Til next time,

Traci

March 5, 2009

Howdy Cutters,

Hope everyone is doin’ well and enjoying a little bit of spring weather.  Just a few things to visit about this time, the first of which, are the results of the World Finals held in Amarillo in February.  Our association had several members who participated and did very well.  Jon Strain and Cuttin Smart ended up 3rd in the 50,000 Amateur and Betsy Talermo and Holidocs Sassy Sug placed 10th in that class, as well.  Stacey Warren and Bens Equalizer tied for 3rd in the 20,000 Non Pro and Colton Strain placed 7th in the Junior Youth aboard Cuttin Smart.  Bob Tragemba and Short of Wood placed 8th in the 10,000 Amateur and Robin Hayes and Shorty Box JD ended up 13th in the 3000 Novice Horse.  Jack Enright and Katlyn Keller also showed in the 2000 Limit Rider and did very well, respectively!  Congratulations to all of you.

As far as the World Finals is concerned, that was the last one!  The NCHA has elected to discontinue that event and concentrate instead on the Eastern and Western National Championships.  I think that I have mentioned before that the $2.00 fee we all pay at cuttings will now be known as the National Championship Fee and is earmarked for those events, to increase the added money in each class.  Everyone should have received their entry forms for Ogden by now and I want to encourage members to go and show for our Association.  As you all probably know, designating our affiliate as the organization that you are “riding for” earns points toward cash awards, and the better you do at the show, the more points our affiliate earns.   Our Association is filled with many talented members and horses and would be well represented so enter up and  GO WYOMING!!!

Speakin’ of going places, who wants to go to Ireland?  Maybe visit Blarney Castle, home of the world famous Blarney Stone.  Legend has it that whoever kisses the stone will be given eloquence “the Gift of the Gab.”  I am wondering if our new president, Jack Enright, has visited that place?  His, uh, “Gift of the Gab” is definitely benefiting the WCHA with the planning of this awesome trip!  Seven days, all expenses paid trip for two to County Kerry, Ireland, the most popular tourist spot in the Country!  Two lucky people will have accommodations at the world famous Ballybunion Golf Resort, where they can play a couple of rounds on the “Old Course.”  This course is rated in the Top Five Courses in the world!  If golf is not your game, there are plenty of other things planned in the trip such as a day of fishing on the Atlantic Ocean or a scenic tour through the Ring of Kerry.  Once the officials on the trip are finished, we will put all the details, along with links to go to, on the wyomingcha.com website so people can take a look at it.  The tickets are being printed as we speak and will be available for members to pick up at the Top Hatt March Show.  The tickets are priced at one for $25 or five for $100.   If we sell 1000 tickets, that would make $25,000 for the WCHA.

So far, the WCHA only has about 6 approved shows for the year, including some tentative ones, so try to go to all of them and support the Association.  The saddle classes this year are the 3000 Novice Horse and the Non Pro.  Just a reminder for everyone to reserve your rooms early for Wheatland and I hope to see you all there in a couple of weeks!  Take Care,

Traci

February 5, 2009

Howdy Everyone,

Well, unfortunately, the ground hog did see his shadow on the 2nd of February, so……….that means six more weeks of winter???  Looks like winter will just be concluding right before the Top Hatt Arena March Show!  Now, that is convenient!

I am happy to report that our Association is definitely starting out 2009 on the right foot!  Cattle deals are being made (thanks Justin) facilities and motels are booked for our events in Casper with several comped rooms!    Thanks to Lori Stillwell for being so organized.  Our futurity is approved with all revisions in place thanks to Meredith, Steve and Cathy.   Still lots to do but all of this is a great start!

I also wanted to let everyone know about a fundraiser that is in the works, thanks to our new president, Jack Enright.  Now, if you don’t know Jack, when you are at the next WCHA show, just listen for a guy that has a pretty thick Irish accent and that would be him.  Jack has been in negotiation with the Board of Tourism in Ireland, (Jack’s hometown) trying to arrange a 10 day vacation for two.  So far, the motel, rental car, and meals have been comped!  It is our intention to raffle this trip off over the summer to raise funds for our Association   So, two lucky people may be making a trip to Ireland in the near future!  More on that as it develops.

One last bit of great news.  We have a new saddle sponsor!  Casey Shultz and State Farm Insurance from Cheyenne are sponsoring one of our saddles this year.  Casey graduated with honors from CSU with a BS in Mathematics and has been with State Farm Insurance for 15 years.  Casey’s office is located in Cheyenne and specializes in health insurance.  Four licensed and highly trained team members are employed in Casey’s office and they provide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a live “on call” phone and email service.   Casey is an avid horse enthusiast and has been getting more involved with cutting horses over the past eight years.  He is the father of four children:  Connor, Collin, McKenna and Macy.   Thank you Casey for your tremendous generosity!  I am positive whoever wins the saddle that you sponsor will be very proud to do so and be very grateful to you and your company!

That’s it for this time, folks, so if any of you are out checking cows or something and you happen to see a large, furry rodent and you happen to have your gun with you……you know what to do.  Talk to you all later,

Traci

January 5, 2009

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all had a nice Holiday!  Our show season is off and running as the first show of the year in Torrington is complete.  The weather was a little nippy but that didn’t stop those who were itchin’ to get the year started!  With a total of 224 works for the week end, the show went well.  The ground was good, the building was nice and warm, and the cattle were frisky!  Thanks Clark and Hank for putting on such a nice show!  Unfortunately, the show scheduled in Torrington on the 13-15th of February has been cancelled because of the World Finals Show but they are going to try to schedule more shows later in the year and I will keep you posted on those dates.  Check out the updated schedule on our page.

Well, with the New Year comes some new changes in some of the NCHA rules.  One thing is the payout schedule.  If a class has $500 or more added, there will be fewer places paid.  Monies will be paid for every four cutters. If the added money is $499 or less the payout remains the same. Once again, the $2.00 World Finals Fee has now become the National Championships fee and will be used at the Western and Eastern National Championships to increase the added money in each class to $20,000!  The entry fee for each class will remain at $500.00.  If you qualified last year, you should be receiving your letter from the NCHA in the near future!  There are also some class changes for the 2009 point year and they are as follows:  The 3000 Novice Horse Non Pro will now become the 5000 Novice Horse, Non Pro and the 10000 Novice Horse, Non Pro will now jump to the 15000 Novice Horse, Non Pro.  However, the 3000 Novice Horse Class and the 10000 Novice Horse Class will remain the same.  One other rule change that I wanted to be sure to include is the “Open Hand” rule.  This rule change has been recently defined.  In a nutshell, you may ride with an open or closed hand, touching the neck or not.  The thing you can’t do is run your hand up the horse’s neck or, obviously, make contact with the bit.  Right in front of the saddle horn is where they want you to put it and leave it.  If you are interested in viewing all of the 2009 NCHA Rule changes, there is a letter posted on the WCHA website that lists them all!

That’s about it for this time………Next issue I hope to introduce our new officers after they are approved by the membership at our January meeting.  I hope to include minutes from that meeting, as well, so until then, get your horse’s legged up!  It’s show season!!!!

Happy New Year, Everyone!

By the time you receive this newsletter, 2008 will be history, literally!  And, with a new year comes new opportunities and new challenges for our association.  As you know, our WCHA Board of Directors is working hard to get this association operating in the black again and I would like to urge each and every member to get involved!  Why get involved, you might ask??  Here are a few reasons:  The sport of cutting is not just a hobby for most, it is a way of life.  It provides many of us with the means to make a living and others with a very satisfying hobby.  It is a sport that the whole family can participate in and within it is a wonderful entity of friends, fun and fellowship.  It is a western lifestyle that we all enjoy very much!  So, give back to an association that lends so much to your life!  Find a sponsor, volunteer to be on a committee, donate a valuable commodity---your time!

The Board of directors held a meeting on December 17 to hear the recommendations of the budgetary committee and to nominate officers for 2009.  The following is a list of nominations for each office and are for the consideration of the membership.  Ballots will be sent out and are due back post marked no later than the 10th of January.  Please return your ballots to:  WCHA c/o Traci Hatten, 210 Sybille Cr Rd, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201

With that said, our new show year will be off to a start with the Goshen County shows in Torrington….Good luck to everyone.  One last bit of good news I would like to pass on to everyone is that after a very long wait, Muffy Rogers has finally received a new lung and is recovering well!  Our best wishes to you, Muffy!  ‘Til next time,

November 17, 2008

Hi Folks;

The weather is getting a little worse as ole’ man winter starts to poke his nose into things!  Time to get to work on those two year olds and give the rest of the crew a little time off!  Not too much time, though, as our Wyoming show season is going to start early this year.  Torrington has scheduled two shows, one January 3 & 4, and the other February 14 & 15, while Top Hatt Arena  is scheduling one March 28 & 29.  These shows are tentative at the moment and I will have the details published as soon as I receive the info.  I encourage our show producers to get their approvals sent in so we can get the rest of our 2009 schedule together.

Now, some note worthy news about some of our members who are holding their own in the NCHA World Standings! Betsy Talermo is ranked 23rd in the 50K Amateur with earnings of $6323.25 and  29th in the 10K Novice Non Pro.  Jake James is ranked 18th in the 20K Non Pro with earnings of $2544.58. Also, Wyoming member Jon Strain is ranked 7th in the Non Pro and 4th in the 50K Amateur. Son, Colton Strain is ranked 15th in the Jr. Youth and 12th in the 10K Amateur.  His aunt Stacey Warren sits 2nd right now in the 10K Amateur!  Great job, folks, and we wish you the best for the rest of the year!

A couple days after you all receive this newsletter, the NCHA Futurity will be under way.  Dates for the Futurity are November 22 – December 14th.   There are several people showing horses in the Futurity this year who are also familiar faces around our Wyoming shows and they are:  Justin Phinney, Kenny Miller, Tom Campbell, Jamie Snider and Kenny Ingalls.  Here’s wishing you the best of luck, guys!  If you are interested in watching the Futurity finals, it will be broadcast live on RFD-TV Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 pm (Central Time).  It will be re-broadcast December 22nd at 5:00 am (Central) for you early risers.  Live webcasting for the Futurity will begin November 22nd at 8:00 am CST.  Just go to www.nchacutting.com and click on the Live Webcast and watch everything on your computer!

There have been some rule changes on how folks will qualify for the Western National Championships in Ogden and in the next issue, I will explain those changes in detail.  I plan to go over some other rule changes, as well.  So, with that, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Howdy All;

Hope all is well with everyone-not much to write about this time so this is a ‘picture issue.’  I did want to remind everyone of our very important General Membership meeting that will be coming up in the near future.  As soon as I receive the dates, I will let you all know.  If anyone has any suggestions for the Association, please feel free to email me and I will put them on the agenda.  Remember, this is YOUR association!  GET INVOLVED!!  Also wanted to include this letter from Stacey Warren, per her request.  Talk to you all later!

Dear WCHA;

I received my Wrangler this week and just wanted to thank you for all your kind words.  I still really can’t believe it.

Please pass along my thanks to everyone in Wyoming that helped and encouraged me this year.  I couldn’t and wouldn’t have done it without them!  The shows in Wyoming are always fun and friendly and we all enjoyed them thoroughly.

The rest of the family (Jon, Colton and Mom) also asked that I extend their thanks for always making us welcome and the great year-end awards!

We look forward to seeing you all next season.

October 5, 2008

Howdy All;

I think that maybe the Classic Rock Band “Aerosmith” summed up the whole ‘futurity experience’ best in their song….”Livin’ On the Edge.”  That is pretty much what it is like showing a 3 year old…. unless, of course, your name is Dan Hansen.  Dan Hansen hails from Texas and he decided to come to the Wyoming Futurity this year.  He came, he showed, and he won!!  He won a lot!  Dan swept the 3 Year Old Non Pro on Cuttin’ Corn, Cat Nip Merada and Woody Tee Up.  He also cleaned up the Classic Non Pro on Woodys New Gun, CD Owen and Bobin Hood and we can’t forget Odeeodle Oak in the Derby Non Pro!  $14,698,95 in total earnings at our little ole’ futurity!  Congratulations, Dan and thanks for being such a player!

Our ‘little ole’ futurity’ wasn’t so little this year, either!  Thanks to some re-structuring in order to draw more people, entries this year where up by about 45% in the Open 3 year old and the other classes as well.   Todd Adolf won the Open 3 Year old aboard Miss Smart Pep owned by the Round Mountain Ranch in Colorado.  The Derby Open went to Jamie Snider on Docs A Lot of Pepto owned by Thad and Kristen York of Saratoga.   Bill Lacy took home the Derby Non Pro Championship riding Little Choices and Betsy Talermo took the 50k Amateur Derby aboard Somebodys Smart Talk.  The Classic Open went to Rodie Whitman on Cat O Connor, owned by Terry Whitman and the 50k Amateur Classic Championship went to Glenn Barlow of Gillette, riding Cats Good Intentions.  For the week end show, Tom Campbell took home the Open aboard Mr Dualin Olena, owned by Mark Hendrickson, the Non Pro went to Bambi Gress aboard Wee Little Badger and the 50k Amateur was won by Steve Burns on Shesa Pepto Gal.  Congratulations, folks, and thanks once again to each and every participant!!  We appreciate you all hauling to our show because that is what made it a success!!

Speaking of success, this years futurity would not have been one with out the hard work and dedication of a number of people….I am going to start with Rick Alt and company!  Rick and his crew handle all the cattle.  They sort them up, bring them in, move them to the practice pen, bring more in, take some out, keep fresh and used separate, load and unload trucks and keep them all well fed and watered.  That crew covered a lot of miles in those 6 days and our hats are off to them!  Thanks, Rick!

Two other people put in some long hours running the practice pen and they are Pat and Diane Booher.  Thanks so much, you two, for all that you do!  Thanks to everyone else who filled in there, as well.  Cathy and Tom Stalcup were responsible for reserving and bedding stalls and their job was definitely made easier with the use of the Gator donated by Lathrop’s of Casper.  Knife River Construction of Casper generously donated all the sand, which was a huge contribution that we all appreciate!  And, the crew at The Arena had that sand at a perfect depth!  Thanks, guys!  Also, thanks goes out to Hank True and Clark Jeary for arranging the cattle, which were some of the best cattle we have seen in several years!  Kristen York took care of the awards, which were very nice…Each buckle had our official Wyoming Cutting Horse Association logo on it, which was a nice touch!  Lori Stillwell arranged our judge’s rooms, Meredith Lyons worked very hard in the office and did a wonderful job, the Castlewood video folks were always pleasant no matter how late the day went, Deb Simpson kept the show rolling with her ‘MC’ and announcing skills and the gals from “Chubs Grub” kept us all well fed!

Finally, thank you to Steve James for his input, organizing and keeping a watchful eye on the whole event, making sure every detail was covered.  The combined effort of all these individuals made this show a huge success!

Whew!  That’s all I have to say about that!  Hope I didn’t forget anyone and if I did, I apologize.  With our final event for the year complete, we will start gearing up for 2009!    Everyone take care, enjoy this great fall weather and I’ll catch up with you in about two weeks!  Adios!

September 20,2008

Hi Folks,

Well, 2008 is about to be under wraps for our association as this newsletter arrives to you on the heels of our final event for the year:  The WCHA Futurity.  I am so pleased to report that this year’s futurity was a huge success!  Entries where up by about 45% in the Open 3 year olds and all other divisions where up as well.  The show ran very smoothly, ground was excellent and the cattle where probably the best participants have seen in this event for the past several years.  All official results for the futurity and photos of the winners will be published in the upcoming issue!

Next, the Executive Committee of the National Cutting Horse Association held a meeting on September 8-9 in Fort Worth, where they considered the recommendations made by the NCHA’s standing committees at the National Convention and the following items are some changes that our membership needs to be aware of….

Beginning January 1, 2009, joint memberships will have the option of obtaining voting rights for both (husband and wife) members for a total cost of $90, while also maintaining a single-vote joint membership for $60.

Also, there will be no change in the definition of Amateur competitor for the 2009 point year.  A task force will present their final recommendations at the June ’09 NCHA convention.

The subject of random computer draws was also covered and it was decided that in classes exceeding 30 entries, a random computer draw may be used, provided that the judge is present.  All classes that are thirty or less must be hand drawn by the judge.  The Show Management Handbook will be amended, as well, to recommend that judge’s stand be at least six feet high and that judges’ sheets be posted.  Show secretaries should  also be stationed and outside hearing range of the judge and a time clock must also be visible to all judges.

There will also be an amendment to Judges Rule 16 which will prohibit ponying horses in the loping area at all NCHA-produced events, including the World Finals and Eastern and Western National Championships.  This rule is effective immediately.

Now, to a more exciting change!  The $2.00 “World Finals Fee” that we all pay at our weekend shows is now going to become the “National Championships Fee.”  This fee is going to be earmarked for the Eastern and Western National Championships and will increase the added money by 67%!  Now there will be $20,000 added in each class, with the payout adjusted accordingly, however, the entry fee of $500.00 will remain the same.  Sounds great!  If you are interested in viewing all of the details of the Executive Committee meeting, please check it out on our website where the report will be posted.

Finally, we do have some new board members that were elected at our year end banquet and they are as follows:   James Johnson, Jack Enright, Karen True, Cathy Stalcup and Jerry Rankin.

Remember, all WCHA Futurity results will be in the next issue.  Talk to you all later!

Howdy Folks;

If we looked up the word ‘dedication’ in the dictionary, I think we might find this person:  Stacey Warren…..Stacey is a cutter from Colorado that has traveled to every Wyoming show this year and her travels have definitely paid off.  After receiving the news that she had qualified for the Wyoming Novice Masters, she canceled an Alaskan Cruise that she had planned to go on so that she could participate in the Wyoming Year End Cutting held on August 29-31 and her dedication paid off………….Not only did Stacey and her horse Ben’s Equalizer win the Novice Masters Tournament saddle, she also won the 20,000 Non Pro saddle and the 10,000 Amateur saddle!  Congratulations Stacey!!

Stacey’s brother, Jon Strain, kept it all in the family as well by winning the Non Pro Masters Tournament saddle aboard Cuttin’ Smart and Todd Adolf took home the Open Masters Tournament saddle riding Honkytonk Diva, owned by the Round Mountain Ranch in Colorado.  Congratulations, everyone, on your success and thanks for traveling to the shows in our great state!

The final and very prestigious saddle awarded at the year end show was, of course,  the Wyoming Owned and Ridden saddle and that honor went to Justin Johnson, of Casper, who showed the 4 year old, Lil Lilly Lena owned by John and Lin Canady.  Lil Lilly Lena earned $4390.54 total this year in the WCHA.  She placed 2nd in the 3000 Novice Horse class and won the Open Derby class.  Congratulations, Justin, Jon and Lin on a successful year and owning a talented filly!

Another cool award that the WCHA gives is the Rookie of the Year award which goes to a cutter who won the most money in their first year of showing.  That award went to Nathan McAdams of Pinedale, who showed his 3 year old stallion Boonlight Special and his mare Telechex Lena.  Congrats, Nathan.

The WCHA would like to thank a number of people whose contributions made our year end show a success.  First of all, a big thanks goes out to Danny Fenster and Q Creek Livestock for providing the excellent cattle, Rick Alt and company for handling the cattle and Mike Scheik for providing hay to feed the cattle.  We can’t forget the crew at The Arena in Casper, Karen True for arranging stalls, Mari Marquart for doing a great job as our show secretary, Kaitlin Marquart for announcing and anyone else that may have contributed to making our year end show a success!!

The next exciting event on the WCHA’s calendar is the WCHA Futurity which will also be held at The Arena in Casper, September 18th – 23rd.  For information, schedules, working order or entry forms, please go to wyomingcha.com. Everything can be downloaded from there!  If you want to view photos from our year end banquet, please go to our website for that, as well.  Next issue will include the minutes of our meeting held at the banquet and info on our new board members whom we elected.  Until then, may all your cows be fresh ones!

September 2008

Howdy Folks;

By the time this news letter reaches everyone, our Wyoming Cutting Horse Association year end cutting will be in the history books!  Another year under the belt, a lot of horses showed fine progress and people, too.  Our Association is alive and well, with a total of approximately $304,015 dollars worth of prize money awarded this year at 19 cuttings held through out our wonderful state!  After looking through the standings, I noticed that a particular trainer has had a very successful year and he is Justin Johnson of Casper.  Justin (or Judd, as we all know him) was the leading money earner in the Open Masters up to the year end show, with a total of approximately $11,267.05  dollars earned.  Incidentally, the top four horses running for the Wyoming Owned and Ridden:  All About Jerry, ($3769.18) owned by Hank and Karen True,  Lil Lilly Lena, (3504.37) a four year old owned by John and Lin Canady, Texas Teasin, ($2981.40) also owned by John and Lin and Peptos Chicaboon, ($2866.38) owned by Hank and Karen True are all under Justin’s hand.    Kind of speaks for itself, doesn’t it?  Justin is also leading the 10,000 Novice Horse, 3,000 Novice Horse, 1,000 Novice Horse and the Open Derby.  Congratulations, Justin, on a great year!

Remember, our 50% rule has kicked in for all out-of-state cutters.  This has changed our official standings in many classes.  Out of State cutters must have attended at least 50 percent  of the Wyoming shows (9 shows) to qualify for year end awards.  Best of luck to everyone at year end and this time I truly promise that all results will be included in the next issue!!

Happy Trails,

Howdy All;
Well, the year is about to wrap up at our final 2008 show in Casper, August 29-30th. It has been a full year with 19 shows from one end of the state to the other! Thanks to all of the show producers for their hard work organizing shows—and thanks to all the folks who hauled to them!! We would also like to thank all of our sponsors for their support and welcome Lathrop Equipment of Casper as a new cooperate sponsor! Lathrop Equipment has been serving Wyoming since 1952. A full line John Deere dealer for agricultural, lawn and garden, golf and skid steer loaders, Lathrop Equipment employs 60 people at stores in Casper and Riverton. Heavily committed to service, the company runs 6 mobile field service trucks as well as two semi trucks and five small delivery trailers. A well stocked parts department at both locations provides the best in parts service to keep the machines running. Lathrop’s also handles Hesston haying equipment as well as several other lines of farm and light industrial equipment. Gary Lathrop is the General Manager of this fine John Deere store, having taken over for his father, Homer Lathrop, in 1975. Gary is married to Peri Kay and has two grown children. As a part of their sponsorship, Lathrop’s will provide the use of a Gator during the WCHA year end show and futurity! The company is very proud to support the WCHA and we ask the members to please be sure to patronize them and all of our fine sponsors!
Our year end show promises to be an exciting event and a very full week end, as well. Included in the week end show will be an event exclusive to the WCHA: The Wyoming Master’s Tournaments! This tourney consists of three divisions. The Open Masters which includes the top 10 money earners in the Open, 10kNovice Horse, 3k Novice Horse, 1k Novice Horse and 3 year old classes. The Non Pro Masters which includes the top ten money earners in the Non Pro, 50kAmatuer, 10k Novice Non pro and 3k Novice Non Pro classes and the Novice Masters which includes the top 10 money earners in the 20k Non Pro, 10k Amatuer, 2k Limit Rider and 800 Rider. All participants compete in one go round where half are brought back to the finals. Before the finals, the riders are auctioned off in a Calcutta and the champions of each division receive a saddle. The first round of the Master’s Tournaments will be after the colt classes on Friday the 29th of August. There will be two rounds of 1000 Horses and two rounds of 3 year olds, beginning at 1:00pm. The Master’s Finals will follow the last class of the day on Saturday, the 30th.
There are three more saddles to be awarded, as well. Every year, the WCHA draws for two classes to be designated as ‘saddle classes’ and this year they are the 10,000Amateur and the 20,000 Non Pro. The third saddle goes to the the Wyoming Owned and Ridden, which is the highest money earning horse for the year that is owned and ridden by a Wyoming resident.
Finally, our year end banquet will be held at The Ramada Plaza Riverside at 300 West F Street (directly north of the Parkway). The Ramada is also our host hotel and has a block of 35 rooms saved for cutters. Please use the host hotel so they will be encouraged to keep giving our association good deals on rates!! The Ramada’s number is: 307-235-2531 and their rooms are wonderful!
All schedules for the year end are posted on the website, www.wyomingcha.com Next issue will include all results for the year! Take care all and see ya in Casper, Traci

Wow, my first NCHA Nat'l Convention!  I would first like to thank the members of the WCHA for giving me the opportunity to be their voice and I hope I made you proud!  Let me tell you what it was like. First you walk in and get registered, you know the usual, nametag (name, state, and title) and then we received a bag with a huge binder and a couple of other note books.  The bag contained the heart of the convention (when, where and who was all contained).  As members and directors you are able to attend the committee meetings of your choice.  When the general discussion draws to an end the non-committee members are asked to leave and the committee has a closed door meeting where they have discussions and vote on the recommendations they will be sending to the Executive Committee.

So, off I went to the first meeting, which was the amateur committee meeting, and yes the topic was Bronc's Proposal.  As most of you may know this is a passionate and heated debate.  The meeting began with all sorts of numbers and statistics against the proposal and a Professor from Harvard was present to give his opinion (I wonder if he is a cutter). Then they opened the floor and anyone who wanted to voice their opinion had the opportunity.  It was a very well organized and civilized meeting.  I have to say I went in staunchly against the proposal and came out with a different opinion.  There is no question there needs to be "tweaking" of the proposal, but I think in the long run it may be a good thing for the members.  If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me so that we can talk in depth about the proposal.  This proposal was not brought to the executive committee for a vote at this time but I'm sure it will eventually, so let’s keep an open mind and an open dialogue so that our voice will be heard.

My next adventure was to the Limited Aged Event Meeting (this is for non-major NCHA events).  We talked about the new rules that are in place for small futurities as protection (events with less the $50k added).  The WCHA Futurity is protected under these new rules and our dates are secure as well.  The dates will change according to the NCHA Futurity in Ft. Worth.  Every 4 years there seems to be some date confusion as the leap year causes some controversy.  This committee decided that every aged event will shift according to shift of the "Big" Futurity.  If this causes concern with our facility we just need to contact the NCHA and get the "official" dates and put in for those at our facility.

After this meeting, I was able to catch the tail end of the Non-pro Committee meeting and yes the topic was again Bronc's proposal.  Again, a passionate debate was sparked and again people, both trainers and non-pro's voiced their opinions: some for and some against the proposal.  This debate was more centered around trainer’s kids and wives and where they should be able to show.   They also touched on different Awards (Horse of the Year being one of them) and what monies should count toward those honors.

The next day I began with the Major Limited Aged Event meeting.  This meeting was very interesting!  It started with discussions of payouts, schedules and then headed to the class with in a class discussion.  Amateurs that want to enter the limited non-pro felt like they shouldn't have to enter the non-pro to enter the class within a class.  Their recommendation was to have the class become a stand alone so that one could enter it separately.  We also began a discussion on animal welfare; it was brought up about the age of futurity horses and touched on the horse slaughter plants.  This in turn started an "Animal Welfare Task Force" which I volunteered to be a part of.  We are hoping this task force turns into a committee so that our recommendations can go directly to the Executive Committee for a vote.  We hope this task force will help educate the public on how we care, train and breed our horses.  Also bring to the forefront the age we start horses and hopefully get some funding to start study's on cutting horses specifically.

We were treated with a presentation about genetic diseases in horses, as well.  This was a great presentation that really opened the discussion about HERDA.  It was noted the 12 of the top 100 stallions in the Equistat Cutting Statistics are carriers, and no, they did not provide us with a list of names!

As directors, we were obligated to attend the Board of Directors Meetings and there were two of those.  During one of those meetings we had a presentation on the financials of the NCHA.  We also had nominations to fill an opening on the executive committee.  David Stewart, Don Strain and Don Bussey were all nominated.  Denny Dunn respectfully declined his nomination.

At our final meeting we voted for the next member of the executive committee.  Don Bussey had us in stitches with his speech and won the election hands down.  We then heard the recommendations from all 13 standing committees. Since I just wanted to give you a summary I will not give you all of their recommendations.  If you would like further info please feel free to ask.  Dick and I tried to attend different meeting so that we could bring you, the members, and a broader look at NCHA.  Dick was appointed to a committee and will be a great voice for Wyoming.  Please talk to both Dick and myself about any of the issues you see here or read about since the convention.

Respectfully,
Kristen York

Hi Folks;

This ole’ newsletter arrives to you on the heels of the 2nd Annual Barb Dahl Cutting Classic which was held a couple weeks ago on June 12-15 in Jackson, Wyoming.  This special cutting is held every year in memory of our dear friend, Barb Dahl, who was a Wilson, Wyoming native.  Barb had a lifetime of involvement in equine activities which included barrel racing, showing Quarter Horses, the AQHA and eventually the cutting horse industry.   She was an active supporter of the Wyoming Cutting Horse Association for years and served on the board and as an officer.  She was also a founding member and officer of the Central Wyoming Cutting Club.  Along with supporting these associations, Barb was also an avid enthusiast of the participants and always offered a word of congratulations or encouragement! Barb’s cutting this year was a wonderful success, with cutters traveling from Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, California, Nevada and Wyoming to perform a total of 240 works.  The committee would like to thank everyone involved for their generous donation of time and labor.  Also, a special thank you goes out to Merrill Dana of Big Piney for providing the great cattle and the Jackson Land and Cattle Co. for their sponsorship.  Putting on the cutting would not have been possible without the help of these fine individuals!!

The ole’ newsletter is also arriving on the heels of the NCHA National Convention.  One of the hot topics at the convention this year is Bronc Willoughby’s proposed changes to the Non Pro/Amateur classes.  In a nutshell, this proposal eliminates the Amateur classes and replaces them with Non Pro classes, with eligibility determined solely on earnings.  A survey went out a few months ago to see what the membership thought about the proposed changes and the results are in!  The majority surveyed would like to leave the classes as they are, with no changes.  The only proposal that was ‘somewhat’ accepted was changing the criteria for determining amateur status.  This would supposedly allow more amateurs to complete in entry level classes. The next newsletter will include a report on the convention from our National Directors.

Finally, an interesting new topic that has surfaced is the idea of changing the age of futurity colts from three to four years of age.  Right now, this is a topic that is being explored by the NCHA through a survey at www.equinepoll.com.  Please go to this website and cast your vote or post a comment.  The young age of futurity colts has always been a concern to most equine disciplines and even though it definitely breaks with our tradition, changing the age may be something to seriously consider.   The website has a list of pros and cons on the subject so check it out because we are going to be dealing with this in the future…Cast your vote!

The next cutting on the calendar is the Goshen County show in Torrington on June 28th and 29th.   Please remember our 50% Rule for all of you who are setting well in the standings.  The rule states that “a cutter must attend 50% of the shows in order to be eligible for year end awards.”  Fifty percent of the WCHA cuttings this year are10 shows!!  Also, if you find a mistake, please let me know and I will adjust it gladly!  Everyone take care and I hope to see you down the road,

 Traci

Howdy Folks,

I am happy to be serving as your new secretary and am very excited to give back to a wonderful association.  I would like to send out a big thank you to Jamie Cline as she has done a great job serving as our secretary for the past few years.  Doug and she will be moving to South Carolina in mid June to begin the next adventure in their life and we all wish them many, many blessings!

Speaking of blessings, during the past month our great state has received a good deal of rain, which will really heal up the country!  At this time we are about half way through the show season, which has been good so far, however I think we’re all feeling the effects of fuel prices!  Most cutters have had to pick and choose what shows to go to as the fuel prices in most areas are around $4.70 per gallon. Even though it is a little more difficult to be running down the road as much this year, I encourage you all to go to and enjoy what shows you can.   The show producers are always happy to see you and appreciate it when you show up; after all, that is what makes each show a success.

We’ve had a huge run of cuttings in a row, beginning with the Top Hatt May show in Wheatland where the weather was wonderful and the cattle were good!  The Seven Bar Ranch held their summer cutting in Saratoga the following week end and that show was also a success.  Suzi (Menter) Dunning was back showing Tuff As Flip and everyone got to meet Miss Madi Dunning, who is now 11 months old!  This little “cutter in the making” will be celebrating her 1st birthday at the Seven Bar show in July!

The WCHA  was proud to host this years NCHA Days cutting at The Arena in Casper and  everything ran smoothly thanks to the all the folks involved in putting on the event.  We would like to thank Hank and Karen True for all of their hard work, the Q Ranch for providing the cattle, the crew at The Arena for setting up, Rick Alt and all the guys out back for handling the cattle and all the folks who volunteered to run the practice pen!  Our show would not have been such a success without the assistance of these fine individuals!

Unfortunately, the Top Hatt June Cutting had to be cancelled and the next cutting on our roster is the Barb Dahl Memorial Show in Jackson which will be held June 13th-15th.  Finally, the Goshen County Cutting in Torrington the 27t – 29th  will wrap up the month of June.
Kristin York, our new National Director, along with our president, Dick Mulligan, will be heading to Ft. Worth in a few weeks for the NCHA National Convention.  With these two attending the convention, our area will be well represented and we can all look forward to the information they will bring back to contribute to this association. In addition, all members are encouraged to attend, so get your tickets and head to Texas!

Just so you all know, included in this issue of the Wrangler are all cutting results up to Barb’s cutting.  In the July 5th issue, there will be new and updated standings.  The standings will also be on our website, www.wyomingcha.com or www.cuttingnews.com.  So, until next time, here’s hoping that you always remember to “enjoy the ride!”

Traci

Dear Cutters,

Despite a little snow on Saturday, cutters attending the Wheatland show in April enjoyed themselves.  At this time, I have  the results only from Saturday and Sunday.  The $1000 Horse and 3 Year Old Class results will be published in the next Wrangler.

Now you can read the bi-monthly newsletter on our website www.wyomingcha.com.  Also be sure to check the “News & Notes” on www.cuttingnews.com  for the latest developments within the WCHA.  Many times item do not make the deadline for the Wrangler but are of importance to all cutters.  If this is the case, we try to get the news on either or both websites.

Our new corporate sponsor, Greiner Ford, Lincoln, Mercury has teamed with the American Quarter Horse Association to offer a $500 rebate to AQHA members on most new vehicles.  Greiner Ford, Lincoln, Mercury has been in business for 37 years in Casper and are located at 3333 CY Ave.  The dealership offers a play area for children, a refreshment bar for customers and a climate controlled vehicle delivery area for you to take delivery of your vehicle and comfortably go over its features.  These are a few reasons why customers have made Greiner Ford, Lincoln, Mercury the recipient of the Presidents award – an award earned by only 10% of the nations Ford dealers.  If you do stop in to shop for a vehicle, be sure to mention that you are a WCHA member.

Cutters are asked to make stall and room reservations early for the shows they plan to attend.  Many host hotels hold rooms until a certain date and stalls are assigned on a first come first served basis, so it pays to call early.

Results from the NCHA Western National Championships are in for a number of classes as this newsletter goes to the Wrangler.  Most exciting is the news that Andi James is the Champion of the $3,000 Novice Non-Pro on Annies Smart Lady.  Andi and her mare scored big with a 222 to win the class!  Andi also placed as the reserve champion in the Senior Youth class.  Congratulations, Andi!  Many other Wyoming members qualified for the finals in their classes, which is a great accomplishment.  Steve James qualified in both the $3,000 Novice Horse and $10,000 Novice horse on Annies Smart Lady.    Les Bates made the finals in the $3,000 Novice on Guy Baldino’s horse, Slik Moonalena.  Both Andi and Jake James rode in the Senior Youth Finals and Jake placed ninth.  Guy Baldino qualified his mare in the $3,000 Novice Non-Pro and Molly Murphree made the finals in the $2000 Limit Rider. We are very proud of our Wyoming members!  We will have the rest of the results in the next issue of the Wrangler.

It is with regret that I am tendering my resignation as secretary of the Wyoming Cutting Horse Association effective June 1st.   My husband and I will be moving in June (most likely out of the state).  I have enjoyed the camaraderie of our club, the lasting friendships with fellow cutters, and the opportunity to serve as Secretary.  We really have something unique within our organization and I feel privileged to have been a part of it.  If you would be interested in assuming the role of WCHA Secretary, please contact Dick Mulligan.

See you down the road,

Jamie

The Wyoming Cutting Horse Association welcomes new members for 2008:  Karen & Ed Buchanan, Baggs; Thea Chesney, Mitchell, NE.

Dear Cutters,

Our new NCHA National Director is Kristen York.  She will join Dick Mulligan as our voice from Wyoming at the National Convention in June. Congratulations Kristen!

WCHA is producing the Area 4 NCHA Days this year.  Our show committee has done an excellent job organizing the show.  Now we are asking our members to volunteer a few hours of time to man the practice pen or oversee the shavings.  Please call or email me if you are willing to volunteer, we would appreciate your help.  Host hotels for Area 4 NCHA Days are the Ramada Plaza Riverside and The Parkway Plaza.  Both hotels have a $60 rate for cutters but are holding rooms only until May 12th at the Parkway and May 15th at the Ramada.  We are holding a two day show over three days (May 30th – June 1st) and the show will start on Friday at noon.  Fresh cattle practice will be held Friday at 10 a.m.  The show schedule is listed in the Wrangler on the show bill.

We have a contingency of members riding at the Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah.  You can view draws and results on the NCHA website.  The show began on May 1st and some of the early riders are Steve James and Mel Dahl in the 3,000 Novice Horse.  Les Bates is also riding Guy Baldino’s mare in that class.  Andi and Jake James are entered in the Youth. Andi is also riding in the 3,000 Novice Non-pro along with Guy Baldino and Terry McClure.  We have four members riding in the 2,000 Novice Rider – Jack Enright, Molly Murphree, Riley Dublin, and Jerry Rankin.  In the 10,000 Novice Non-Pro we have Hank & Karen True, Betsy Talermo, and Wes McElhinny competing.  We are well represented in the 20,000 Non-Pro with Paul Fehrenbach, Hank True, Betsy Talermo, John and Judy Hayes.  Hank, Betsy, John and Paul are also competing in the 50,000 Amateur along with Andy Wilson.  Karen, Paul and Terry are entered in the $10,000 Amateur.  At the end of the week the Open and Non-Pro’s compete.  Keith Marquart is riding for WCHA in the Open and Betsy and Andy are riding in the Non-Pro.  Congratulations to these qualifiers at the championships – we will be supporting you via the internet!

Lori Stilwell has graciously accepted the position of sponsorship chairperson for WCHA.  She has compiled a very professional looking brochure for perspective sponsors and is contacting potential candidates in Casper.   Recently added as a corporate sponsor from Casper is Greiner Ford, Lincoln, & Mercury. They deal in new and pre-owned vehicles and are located at 3333 CY Avenue.  Greiner Ford, Lincoln, Mercury is the largest Ford, Lincoln, Mercury dealer in Wyoming.  You can also visit them on the web at www.greinerford.com or call 800-714-4280.  The dealership includes a sales, service, parts, and finance departments.  In 2007 they were awarded the “President’s Award” for exellence.  If you are shopping for a new or pre-owned vehicle, consider Greiner Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and you will be supporting a WCHA sponsor.

See you down the road,

Jamie

Dear cutters,

Although snow is still on the ground in parts of Wyoming, our show season is about to begin with the first show in Wheatland at the Top Hatt Arena on April 26th & 27th.. This show is always a great start to our busy show season and a good warm-up for those of you heading to Western Nationals.

Many of you are heading to Ogden to participate in the NCHA Western National Championship Cutting which follows the Top Hatt show.  WCHA always places well in the affiliate challenge and we will be supporting participants riding for us this year also.  This is sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association to provide a “team concept” to the Championships.  Points are earned as follows:  10 points for entering and showing in a class; 25 points for making the finals; 25 points for placing 3rd-10th; 40 points for Reserve Champion; 50 points for Champion.  The top ten scoring Affiliates earn cash awards from AQHA as follows:  $7,500 for top scoring Affiliate:  $5,000 for second; $4,000 to third; $3,000 for fourth; $2,500 for fifth; $1,000 sixth thru tenth.

The Western National Championship show starts May 1st and runs thru May 11th.  You can check results and affiliate challenge points on the NCHA website.

In the last issue of the Wrangler, the proposal to combine the Non-Pro and Amateur classes was reported.  If you are not aware of this proposal, you can see it on the NCHA home page by clicking on Bronc Willoughby’s proposal.  Many of you have sent your comments to Jim Armstrong or Jim Spaulding, both members of the Amateur Committee.  This proposal will be discussed at the NCHA Convention June 20th – 22nd.   If you would like to express your views, you can email either Jim Armstrong at jarmstrong@uci.net or Jim Spaulding at jim_spaulding@hotmail.com.  You can also express your views in person at the convention.  All members are invited to attend the 2008 NCHA National Convention.  It is being held at the Hilton near the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.  You can get more information on the NCHA website under 2008 NCHA convention.
